WEX

Mr. Toad's wild ride

Mr. Toad's wild ride, the most outrageous kids ride in all of Disney land. Once you get on a car, a steering wheel is thrust upon you and they expect you to suddenly start driving. It doesn't take long before you're driving through some unwary owl's library before charging out threw his chimney. It was a nice stroll through the woods turning here and there but nothing was wrong with the ride. There were some owls cooing gently in the trees, sure it was dark but with crickets chirping peacefully without a care in the wold. The track turned making us skillful slide past the bush without a scratch. A rustle of a bush and a dead end shattered the silence as a cop burst forth from the bushes. My brother next to me starts talking in a great British accent about not having time to stop as he whips the wheel around speed out of the forest, and almost hitting the random cars and driving off a dock. All around you there were horns blaring and people shouting. Eventually we flew into a court room where a judge just instantly commanded that we were guilty and sent us into a warehouse full of TNT. Why was that connected to a court? Suddenly all the TNT begins to explode blinding you and leaving your ears ringing as you curve back and forth on the way out. As if that wasn't enough, we leave the warehouse only to bed hit by a train! That was what finally did us in, buying us a trip straight to hell. Demons danced around our cherry red car as we drove through the ever warm hell. After several turns my brother stopped talking in his British accent and we just found a magic door that lead us back out to where we started. From what I take from that story, driving through a peaceful London forest can be quite deadly.

Charlotte

It was WEX, Charlotte had just left the room to check on the other class. For a time it was quiet and everyone was writing. There were just a few people having an ongoing conversation but most people were writing, then someone just popped their head in the door, yelled a random word, then ducked out. That was the end of that silence thing we had going for us. People were yelling across the room, things were flying through the air only a few people were still working, with obvious difficulty. This raged on for several minutes before Charlotte came in. Charlotte's nostrils flared at all the fun being had in the classroom. Everyone stopped mid tag, throw or sentence and turned towards the monster that had just come in, Charlotte stomped across the classroom glaring at anyone who didn't have their nose in their books and were writing. She growled angrily as she sat down on her chair, noticing a moment too late that there was a tack on it. She yelped in pain as she stood up and looked around the room, motioning for everyone who found humor in that outside. Several people ended up coming with her, as she did one last sweep of the room. The students looked as if they'd rather be dead, and lucky them! They might be, as they were never seen again.

Annoying

I was sitting in the kitchen, finally installing wotlk after a long day of school. The patches were finally installed after what seemed like hours, but then my mom came into the kitchen and told me to do the laundry. I walked into the burning hot garage and opened up the washed and dryer, yet there was nothing in either of them. I left the garage and hurried back to the computer after being away for less then a minute, so of course during that time, my brother had stolen the computer. He refused to let me on, nor email the work I was doing while I waited for wotlk to download. Even though I wasn't the one playing wotlk after I had installed it, I still hung around to see the new areas in the expansion. My brother was getting annoyed, for I was helping him with his quests even though he didn't want me to. I eventually left, but I took the box with me, for I hadn't gotten a chance to look at it yet.

Food blog

Why are you doing this recipe?

We are growing an herb garden not only to save costs on buying the herbs, but also in order to try to live more sustainably by having a plant that we grew ourselves and can continue to grow and be harvested multiple times without a dramatic effect on the environment. By actually using what we grow we are saving resources, instead of growing a plant we can't eat any part of, and just having it exist instead of help us to have more sustainable foods without destroying the earth. Though is does not seem that a classroom full of kids can make a difference, but every little part helps, and it can really add up if we take with us the work we did here throughout our lives and grow plants that we can eat. The two essential questions in our project were, "Why don’t people live more sustainably?" and "How can I convince them to do so?" I think that it relates to the first one with the fact of how hard it was to grow our herbs. Ours specifically got attacked by bugs in the ground, which ended up killing one of our herbs plants, and made it harder during the cooking stage, by limiting our resources. It was a difficult process and could be hard to remember to take care of them on a regular basis.

How did you make it?

First of all I got the recipe I used here. (http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1950,145171-243192,00.html)
When harvesting I didn't want to take very much, but thought I might need a bit while cooking. I was cutting off only outlying leaves and trying not to cut off groupings of leaves or ones that were smaller, and instead got a few larger leaves. I spread out the area in which I was harvesting, due to many conflicting reports about where to cut off the leaves, and instead focused on which ones seemed fully grown and healthy.

The recipe I used was fairly simple. All you need was a stick of butter, basil, carrots, and syrup. Starting out I had to chop up tons of carrots in order to fill the bottom of a small sauce pan, instead of using full sized carrots, I ended up using baby carrots and filling it up until it seemed the correct amount of carrots for the recipe. I then had to fill up the pan with just enough water to cover the carrots, and put it on the stove to boil for 10 minutes while preparing the other ingredients, making sure that the water wasn't boiling too hard.
(pics of process)

Gonna need to chop up a lot of carrots!

Starting to boil!

As for preparing the ingredients, I had to start off by measuring 3 table spoons of butter and cutting that off to put in. I then took the basil and layered it, tied it tight into a ball, and cut that into smaller pieces. Once the carrots were done boiling, I added the cut up basil, butter, and measured out two tablespoons of syrup and added those to it, stirred it in, and set it to boil for another 12 minutes, stirring it repeatedly throughout the duration.

Be sure to stir it!

mmmm sweet carrots

How did it go?

The recipe didn't turn out all that different from things I had tried before, but was still delicious. The only problem I can think of was maybe having too many carrots in there so that the ingredients didn't show as much taste. If I was to do this again I would probably have cooked the food the day before so the basil would be fresher, and possibly have used less carrots so you could taste the ingredients more. I'm not sure that this has completely swayed me to grow more food myself. It was a very difficult process with much luck involved and hard work and remembering. There are also so many things that can go wrong and just end up killing the plant and wasting your time, effort, and money. It does seem like quite a bit of effort to add a bit of extra flavor. There just seems to be too much that can mess it up, unless you do it larger scale, which I'm not sure if I would have the time to spare.

Though she loves solitude, she believes that she must not get too caught up in that or she will miss things around her and become detached with the world, and hurt those around her, not to mention she can miss out on huge things that affect her.

Sustainability visits

1. What is your name and your role here at the farmers market?

Carey Atig

2. Why do you choose to shop here/garden here/support this CSA?

The food here is just great, and it is not too far from my home. It is well worth it to wait until Thursday to do some of my shopping.

3. When did you first start coming here?

A few years ago.

4. Do you garden at home? Why or why not?

I don't, I live in an apartment, so I don't have the room to garden, I did try it anyway though, and lets just say I do not have a green thumb.

5. How did you find out about this place?

I saw signs about it while driving around in the area, and decided to stop by after looking it up one night, and decided it would be interesting to check out, so here I am!

6. What would be your advice to get others to do what you do?

It's not hard and is easy to pick up! Looking up a few guides for gardeneing never hurts and the food at the farmer's market is great and worth trying.

Ecologic intelligence

Though I have an even better picture at the bottom, I added this one just to be safe.

Ways the world is already becoming better!

1. What is ecological intelligence? Ecological intelligence is when instead of looking at just the last phase of production for what products they used, looking at the whole thing along the way to see if it is truly good for the environment before you just consider it "green".
2. This connects to the essential question of why people do not live more sustainably. When going to buy a product, one will generally look for something "green" but in reality it can be just as bad or worse then something that is not green. When people shop they are not sure to trust what it says or not, because it is not always telling the truth.
3. I generally give a lot of thought when buying something even if it says that it is green. I try not to buy too much and keep it to a minimum. I do try to figure out where everything came from when I can, though that is not always possible. I do feel that is our responsibility to know what we are buying before we go out and buy it. Some companies should not be allowed to say that they are green, and should have more warnings on the packaging of where things come from.

Ad campain planning

1. Present proposed motto

Eat lean go green.

2. Present proposed logo

3. Present theme/direction for campaign
a. (based on findings in your research)

Either trying to educate people or make them feel guilty.

4. Present ideas on how you will create the Video PSA and what you
will need to accomplish it.
a. Viral video?
b. Filmed with iPhones? Camera phones?

Filmed with a digital camera and showing part of the problem then showing solutions.

5. Find two modern advertisements that resemble or inspire your group
for your campaign and link them on your DP/blog as models.

This ad is using a bit of danger/threat to their ad which is pretty interesting and saying how eating meat can be deadly.

This one is pretty interesting, making it so the chicken is speaking itself telling you not to eat it and adding to the guilt idea.

List your group roles here for this portion of the project
(who will focus on what?)

Interview results

1. What struck you about the data?
2. Were you surprised by any of the results? How so?
3. What were your expectations? Were these met or not?
4. Based on your findings, what type of ad campaign will you run? Will you being to educate people? Encourage or coerce people? Embarrass people? What is your angle?

1. I was surprised by how few people were vegetarians and how much they seemed to care. Many of the people we interviewed knew the bad side of meat, but preferred to eat meat. The polls were shifted in a different direction then I would of thought, and had a few different questions where the results for both sides were pretty even.
2. It seemed many people did not think that eating vegetarian would make much of a difference, or just did not know. I would have though more people would know about the meat vs. vegetables for sustainability with production and treating.
3. I was expecting more people to know, but there is nothing much I can do about that until we begin our ad campaign.
4. I think from our results we should either try to educate or scare people. If we scare people we could be talking about animal cruelty with some of the meat production, or just basic education because many people did not know anything about our subject.

The path to freedom

1. In this day and age it really is something out of the ordinary to be completely sustainable, and to have nobody in the family have any sort of job. Even though they do have some electricity, their house has almost no electricity usage, and even then has a power plant. It seems interesting that a family has a way to live, that if we all followed, would create a sustainable human race. It just seems odd that the way to become sustainable is known, yet they're the only ones that are truly following it to freedom.
2. Honestly when I think of their needs vs wants sheet, I imagine many more needs then wants. They don't have a cell phone or many things that people have these days, and create many things themselves and avoid the costs in the first place. They spend near nothing, and make money still form their style of living. Their needs list would not even be that big, but would be much larger in proportion.
3. This fits into what we're studying in My Ishmael because it is about living sustainably. If we all lived just like them there would be no wars and would create an actual utopia, if we are ever to achieve a utopia, this is the only way I see it as being done. Not only would everybody be happy, but we would actual reach sustainability and not continue to destroy our planet the way we have.
4. The family seems to live and work as a whole unit. Many families get divorced or just don't spend much time with each other, however this family is just the opposite. http://www.pathtofreedom.com/ They are not living in the stone age, they aren't using all the latest gadgets either. They are just using what is needed while only minimally taking what they want and looking out for each other.

Ishmael blog assignment #2

1. Anthropomorphism mean the use of human characteristics in something that is not human. When Ishmael used the word anthropomorphism, was referring to objects acting in a way that resembles the way that humans act. He was referring to animals marking their territory by going to the bathroom and how humans saw that as human characteristics of marking land, even though they do not go out of their way to find it. He was using the word to show how we are thinking of the deer and how they mark their territory to be the same way we mark our own by buying it and living on it.

2a. Ishmael defines erratic relations as a way of preventing war between the cawks. The cawks have developed it to prevent all out war while still punishing those who do wrong. If a group tribesmen came and killed some people, they would only punish the group, not start an all out war.

2b. Not only does it prevent all out war between two tribes, but it keeps both sides relatively happy. The ones who the crime was against would get their revenge, and those from the other tribe would not be in an all out war and be able to continue their lives!

2c. The reason they do not have all out war is because they want a future for their race. They want to be able to expand and reproduce, until one tribe becomes big and proves it dominance and have one large tribe for their race.

Ishmael blog post 1

1. Two ways to identify people from our culture are through our way of keeping food under lock and key, and identifying ourselves as fundamentally flawed. Ishmael says that people all over the world are of the same culture, and I agree with him. The kind of culture that Ishmael is talking about is the culture of agriculture, which is what seperates us from animals. The majority of the world are takers while very few remain as leavers.
2. Ishmael says that humans are inheritly flawed, and I disagree. I feel that Humans are not inherently flawed. But our culture is. The leavers were not really flawed, but when we expanded to something we didn't really know by becoming takers. We did not know how to make a civilization and were then destined to fail. One can not try to expand onto a failed experiment without scrapping it and starting over. The leavers were going along perfectly fine before the takers came. Humans are not inherently flawed, just takers are.
3. Leavers are those who didn't take up agriculture while the takers were practiced and picked up agriculture as their way to survive and formed a civilization. Americans are what are known as takers. We are completely based on the beliefs of the takers, and thus also believe ourselves as fundamentally flawed and destined to fail without trying to save ourselves. We feel that the only way to find a way to live sustainably is to find a different race to show us the way and save us.

Freedom and sustainability

1.Living sustainably is something that humans have yet to achieve. We are not living sustainably, we are continually expanding and continuing to use up more of Earth's space and destroying the planet. To live sustainably would involve controlling expansion and reducing the need in order to survive. If one was to reach sustainability, one must also destroy continued growth or you would be forever traveling and expanding until you eventually run out of space and can no longer be sustained, and start dying off taking everything with you. To be sustainable with food and living is to be sustainable with growth.

2. As a 14 year old the amount of freedom you have is limited. You can't drive yet, and even once you get your permit you must drive with a parent before you can drive with yourself. You can barely leave home without permission and still rely on parents. We have to go to school and have to continue to schedule. There is a lot of stuff you can't do until you grow up, drinking, jobs and much more. Even when you grow up there are still lots of things you can't do.

3. There is not much you can do at 14 to become more sustainable. You don't control your funds or even what you eat or how much. That is all determined and there are many decisions you cannot make. You can try to conserve power and not eat as much sure, but there is not a very large area of difference because you are not in control.

Semester goals

Patience is a virtue

When I started school back in august, I wasn't sure what to expect in my first year of high school. I have, without a doubt, grown outside my original group of friends. Many of my middle school friends went to another school and the ones I remember, I go between. I am not always with just one group of my friends. I have really gone outside my comfort zone and tried many new things. I feel I'm more likely to try something new then I was before.
One skill I think is important to survive in humanities is patience. If you try to take short cuts you really will not do as well on assignments or class work. You have to be patient so you make sure you get everything and take your time. If you try to just get an assignment done you really are not putting your full 100% effort into it and that can be drastic in humanities specifically.
One thing I need to improve in is in fact taking my time while reading. I tend to end up skipping over words while I am reading, which leads to less understanding because I miss a few words. I am really going to have to tell myself to read slower and make sure I read every word. If I have to I should re-read pages multiple times until I think understand the page pretty well. If I don't do this I will not get as much from the books I read.
The subject that I want to research the most is something more in the biology section. I find animals quite interesting and there is never a limit to what they can do. I've found them interesting for a long time and I would want to research them more.
